The National Gallery and the Tate Gallery in London are probably the most famous British art galleries. The National Gallery contains more than \(2000\) exhibits — the masterpieces of European art from to \(XIII\) to to \(XX\) century.
 
The gallery was opened in \(1839\), but some people consider \(1824\) the year of founding the Gallery. In \(1824\) the Gallery bought \(38\) pictures from the John Julius Angerstein’s collection. As the number of pictures increased, the new building was built. The architect William Wilkins chose the northern side of the Trafalgar Square for the new Gallery. Seven years later the new building was opened for the public.
 
The Tate Gallery, another famous British museum, was built by Sir Henry Tate. Nowadays it's not just a museum, it's four galleries united under the name of Tate Modern. They are situated in London, Cornwall and Liverpool. Sir Henry Tate's collection became the first exhibit in the new gallery. These days it’s a museum where you can see not only the masterpieces, but works of various modern artists too. Tate St. Ives and Tate Liverpool in Cornwall house dazzling collection of contemporary art. By the way, the entry fee in Tate Liverpool is free for everyone. Any tourist can enjoy amazing works by many interesting modern artist.
