There is a traditional proverb 'Charity begins at home'. It seems that British have put it into action. There are almost 190,000 charity organisations in the United Kingdom. This impressive number gives some idea about British people’s will to support and protect people in need.

Macmillan Cancer Support, British Red Cross and St. John Ambulance are some of the well-known British charity organisations. People help them by volunteering or donations. Also there are a lot of shops established by these charities. For example, Oxfam has almost 1000 shops all over the UK.

Goods in charity shops often cost much less than in usual stores. The products can be donated by citizens. It can be books, clothing, musical instruments or costumes for festivals or celebrations like St. Patrick's day. Some stores sell new products related to the objective of the charity.
In the US charity shops are called thrift stores and this kind of shopping — thrifting — is very popular!
