Read to the text about trees.

Рис. \(1\). Forest
Trees are an important part of the global ecological system. They sustain life on our planet. Some of them can be thousands of years old. Trees are beautiful and impressive. They are vital for millions of living organisms, including humans. They shelter animals from birds to insects, give people fruit and nuts and clear the air.
Trees in the city are crucial for the ecosystem, because they help to deal with air pollution. Unfortunately, trees in big cities are under threat nowadays. They can't cope with the increasing amount of pollutants and their root systems are often damaged by laying cables underground. A lot of trees are cut down in order to make new roads or widen the old ones. Deforestation is one of the biggest reasons for climate change. People fell trees for cattle-farming, building new houses, mining, wood production and other purposes.
Forests are often called the lungs of the planet, because they absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen and therefore stabilize the Earth's climate. Rainforests provide habitat for millions of species and prevent soil erosion. Also about \(25\)% of medicines we use nowadays comes from rainforest's plants. Trees reduce the ultraviolet exposure and therefore indirectly protect people from developing skin cancer.
Tropical forests are in danger. Deforestation destroys about \(18\) million hectares of rainforests every year. The main reasons are logging (usually for producing furniture, paper and charcoal) as well as unsustainable agriculture and increasing consumption.
Forests are a valuable part of the ecosystem and our lives. Our lives and health depend on them, so we really should protect this part of our planet. We have to take action now, otherwise we put the whole ecosystem, including humankind, in danger.
Planting new trees is something everyone can do. In fact, planting a tree somewhere in the neighbourhood or in a forest is one of the best things you can do to protect the environment. Supporting organisations like The Millions Trees Project can also help. An interesting fact — planting trees is now obligatory for the students of Delhi University. They can do it in any state in India. It's a part of their new environmental course.
