Ernest Hemingway is one of the greatest American novelists of the \(XX\) century. He was a war journalist before starting his literary career. He is famous for novels like A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls and the short story The Old Man and the Sea.
Ernest Miller Hemingway was born in \(1899\). He spent a lot of time in Michigan where he learned to fish and hunt. In high school, Hemingway worked on his school newspaper, Trapeze and Tabula, writing mostly about sports. After high school he went to write for the local newspaper, The Kansas Star.
\(19\) year old Hemingway went to Italy to the World War \(1\) and was seriously injured. In Italy he met an a nurse, this love story inspired his famous novel A Farewell to Arms.
He returned to America and in Chicago met his first wife. Later they moved to Paris and there Hemingway met many great writers and artists of that time (Joyce, Picasso, Fitzgerald and others).
While reporting on Spanish Civil War, he gained material for his outstanding novel For Whom the Bell Tolls.
He worked as a war journalist during the World War \(2\) and reported on several key events, such as D-Day landing. In \(1951\), Hemingway wrote The Old Man and the Sea, a book that brought his the Pulitzer Prize. Three years later he won the Nobel Prize.
In the last years of his life his physical and metal health started deteriorating. The writer committed suicide in \(1961\).
Hemingway left an impressive legacy and hugely influenced the literature of the \(XX\) century. His prose is simple, direct and honest.
