Рис. \(1\). St. Petersburg
St. Petersburg is one of the most amazing cities in the world. The Northern capital, as it is often called, was founded by Peter \(I\). The emperor wanted to gain a new seaport and a new capital for the new European Russia.
Russian emperors were buried in the Peter and Paul Cathedral since the death of Peter the Great. The cathedral is one of the greatest symbols of the Northern Venice. It is located inside the fortress of the same name. The fortress used to be as prison, but was turned into a museum in \(1924\). Now it's the main part of the State Museum of Saint Petersburg History.
St. Petersburg is home to numerous landmarks and breathtaking architecture. Peter \(I\) invited the best Europearn architects like Carlo Rossi, Auguste de Montferrand, Carlo Bartolomeo Rastrelli and others. They created glorious pieces of architecture. The Winter Palace is one of them. Is used to be a royal palace, but now there is Hermitage — one of the best-known museums in the world, attracting tourists from all over. In Hermitage you can see a stunning collection of true masterpieces.
The Russian State Museum is another great place to visit. Here you can enjoy the most beautiful pieces of Russian art — from paintings to sculptures, from \(XII\) to \(XXI\) centuries.
Palace Square is the heart of the northern capital. It is located between Nevsky Prospekt with Palace Bridge. In the center of the square you can see the Alexander Column. It was created after Russian army defeated Napoleon. The monument is a single piece of red granite.
Nevsky prospect is probably the most famous and busy street in the city. It is \(4,5\) km long and connects the Alexander Nevsky Lavra (the monastery) and the Admiralty.
St. Petersburg is the place of fairytale beauty and millions of tourists from all the corners of the world visit it every year. Also it's a popular destination of domestic tourism. In summer you can see the amazing white nights and enjoy opening the bridges over Neva in the evening.
