Рис. \(1\). Stirling Castle in Scotland
Scotland is a part of the United kingdom. The capital of the country is Edinburgh and the largest cities are Glasgow and Aberdeen. Towns in Scotland are beautiful. One of the most amazing cities in the country is Edinburgh. If you like walking and watching old historical sights for hours, Edinburgh is a good choice.
Edinburgh is a very green city, there are gardens and parks everywhere. One of the most impressive landmarks in the city is Edinburgh Castle. It is situated on the Castle Rock. There has been a royal residence there since the \(XII\) century. The castle is the second most popular tourist landmark in the UK. It attracts millions of visitors every year. Now it is a residence of the British royal family (the Queen usually spends some time in Edinburgh in summer). Also the festival known as the Edinburgh Military Tattoo is held in the castle every August.
Scotland is a quite mountainous country. There are three main mountain ranges: the Scottish Highlands, the Southern Uplands and the Central Belt. Ben Nevis, the highest peak in the UK, is also in the Highlands.
The Glenfinnan Viaduct was built at the turn of the \(XX\) century. It overlooks a magnificent scenery — Loch Shiel and the West Highlands. The viaduct was made widely popular by its appearance in Harry Potter films.
Scotland is the place where history is so close that you can literally touch it, but there are some modern landmarks as well. For example, the Kelpies. They are steel sculptures of two horse heads built in \(2013\). The idea of the sculptures is based on the famous Scottish legend about a water spirit that looks like a horse and lives in ponds, pools and lakes.
The Highland Games are a series of events called to celebrate Scottish culture. There are piping and dancing competitions, athletic competitions like caber toss or hammer throw and various traditional games.
Scotland is a beautiful country that won't leave you indifferent. Instead of seeing Scotland's landmarks and attractions only on TV or in movies, think of visiting this wonderful place yourself!
